Updated 2016 Malibu Stakes Claim in Competitive Mid-size Sedan Segment

By | 2016 Malibu | No Comments

New model-year Malibu improves in areas such as leg room, ride and handling to compete against other sedans

A lot of focus on the new Chevrolet models for 2016 was aimed on the redesigned Camaro. However, another Chevrolet mainstay that has been around since the ‘60s also underwent updates and redesigns for the 2016 model year, and it aims to make its mark in the ultra-competitive mid-size sedan market.

JBC-2016 MalibuReviewers of the new 2016 Malibu have gone as far as to call it the best mid-size sedan from Chevrolet they’ve experienced (GM Authority). That’s quite a compliment for a nameplate that started in 1964. Exterior updates include a longer wheelbase longer overall length. The 2016 Malibu also shed weight like the new Camaro — the sedan is 300 pounds lighter than the 2015 Malibu.

The lighter weight creates a more responsive and smoother driving experience for new 2016 Malibu owners near St. Louis. In fact, according to Chevrolet, the 2016 Malibu is the lightest vehicle in the segment (curb weight of 3,086 pounds) as well as the longest at more than 3,500 inches.

Inside, the 2016 Malibu has added 1.3 inches of leg room to create a more comfortable Chevy experience for the passengers sitting in the rear seats. The overall design of the interior feels uniquely like a Chevrolet and sets itself apart from the segment’s competitors.

The available 4G LTE Wi-Fi makes the Malibu a mobile hotspot, and the new smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will make use of your smartphone more efficient and safer. The new 1.5-liter turbrocharged EcoTec engine is the base offering, outputting up to 160 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Get up to 31 mpg combined and 37 mpg on the highway, making the Malibu a great choice for a daily driver. Need a bit more power? Check out the 2.0-L turbo engine with up to 250 horsepower!

After 5 decades, popular Chevrolet model now sold in more than 25 markets around the world

As the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu begins its production in Kansas City, Kan., the iconic vehicle for Chevrolet rolled off the assembly line for the 10 millionth time. Since its introduction in 1964, the Malibu has reached eight figures in production around the world.

The U.S., Korea and China comprise the three biggest markets for the sedan, accounting for 90 percent of current Malibu sales. The Malibu is becoming a popular car on a global scale as Chevrolet sells it in more than 25 markets around the world.

“Some people are buying their very first Malibu today and others may have driven a Malibu from a different generation as their first car,” Alan Batey, global Chevrolet president, said. “It is a car that has resonated with customers for more than half a century.”

Chevrolet Malibu History

Space and efficiency were the names of the game for the Malibu in the early ‘60s. The newest Chevy vehicle, along with the Chevelle and 300 at that time, was named after the California city. The Malibu was one of the first mid-size vehicles called at that time “intermediate.”

JBC-78 Malibu Owners ManualThese three vehicles sold more than 370,000 in their first years. Within five years, they already surpassed the half a million mark. There was even a muscle car version of the Malibu — the Malibu SS.

When the Malibu first hit the scene in ’64, the most common form of customer service was the owners manual and maybe a trip to the dealer. Now, the ninth-generation Chevrolet Malibu customers can contact their dealer, Chevrolet service, support and more 24/7 thanks to email, social media and more.

Latest Malibu lighter, more efficient

The 2016 Malibu is lighter and longer than the 2015 model year, and the standard 1.5-liter turbo powertrain is projected to offer 37 mpg on the highway. An available hybrid option works off the current Volt format and is expected to offer 47 mpg combined.

For fifty-one years, Chevrolet has offered a quality sedan — formerly a coupe, convertible and wagon — to families around the U.S.A. and the world. Fans of this classic nameplate can check out the latest ones in our inventory at Jim Butler Chevrolet in Fenton, MO, the No. 1 Chevy dealer in Missouri.
